Haylea Hounsom Heyns is a vocalist based in Durban, South Africa. She studied a BA: Music & Drama Perfromance, graduating Cum Laude. She is a Soprano and specialises in Popular Music and Musical Theatre, but is able to move from one style to another fairly effortlessly. This is attributed to her Classical training.
Over the past few years she has performed in shows including Ushaka Marine World's "Dolphins by Starlight," the Pietermaritzburg City Orchestra's "A Night at the Opera," as a soloist at the Old Mutual Music at the Lake Concert with the Durban City Orchestra, at the FIFA Fan-Fest during the Soccer World Cup, and at Splashy Fen Music Festival. She performed with world renowned percussionist - Efrain Toro, during his visit to South Africa and was also contracted to sing the South African National Anthem at the Varsity Shield rugby games in KZN, which were broadcast live on SuperSport during February / March 2014 - 2016.
Recent Musical Theatre performances include KickstArt's theatrical production of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," "Shrek The Musical," and a leading role alongside Actor / Comedian Aaron Mckilroy in his Christmas comedy - "Funny Father Christmas" where she played Santa's sweet-voiced wife, Mary Christmas.
Upcoming performances in 2016 include the role of Rapunzel in Steven Sondheim's "Into the Woods," "Shrek The Musical" at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City, Johannesburg, and as Princess Rose in the title role of KickstArt's year end pantomime - "Sleeping Beauty."
Haylea was recently nominated for several Durban Theatre Awards together with female vocal group, TakeFive - formed by well-known Durban Singer, Shelley Mclean.
