In addition to the usual favourites like Leroy Anderson’s spectacular "Christmas Festival" and "Sleigh Ride", under the baton of resident conductor David Plank, the orchestra will also be joined by local vocalist Haylea Hounsom, who will be singing some heart-warming classics like "Chestnuts Roa...sting on an Open Fire", "White Christmas", and "O Holy Night".

Other highlights include "We Need a Little Christmas" from the musical "Mame" (and more recently made famous on the Fox Television show "Glee") as well as a charming new arrangement of "The Twelve Days of Christmas".

Showgirl SA: Be Captivated - Be Enchanted - Be Dazzled

I am excited to announce that I have just joined the Showgirl SA team, managed by Redcap Radio DJ - Penelope Kirkland. I was invited on board by Penny who wanted to add a new dimension to the show. My first gig with the girls was a corporate event at The Scarlet Ribbon in Johannesburg. The theme for the event was James Bond, so in keeping with the theme I performed Adele's "Skyfall" and Shirley Bassey's "Diamonds are Forever." Sound bites to follow ;)

A special thanks to Wayne Du Preez for the amazing photography! You can check out his work here: www.facebook.com/wdpvisuals/

REVIEW DURBAN SUPPER THEATRE: 'TAKEFIVE' - Gisele Turner

The Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo was packed to the gills for the closing performance of ‘Take 5’, a musical revue featuring five beautiful, talented ladies. These excellent musicians took to the tiny stage and sparkled with energy and enthusiasm; each individual was given her chance in the spotlight, and all of them came together for some tight, well arranged harmonies. It was a treat! - Gisele Turner
The five musicians featured in ‘Take 5’ each have something special to offer this excellent show. The beautiful Shelly McLean, who has countless successful productions under her belt, lent an air of relaxed experience, which held things together lightly, but firmly.  Her confidence at the piano and her vocal versatility made her the natural leader. Dependable Tory Du Plessis also showed self assurance and experience at the keys and her musical voice was strong and well modulated.

Haylea Hounsom has a clear soprano and was equally at ease with light opera as with the more popular repertoire; she also drew the eye with her expressive face and body language and her enthusiastic interpretation of the lyrics. Tammy Saville, with her unusual sultry looks, brought her exquisite contralto to the party, adding depth to the harmonies and delight to the solos. Youngest of the five, the lovely Chloe Clark, offered a strong and versatile voice as well as ingĂ©nue poise and energy.  They performed in various combinations, taking turns at the piano, the guitar and a little percussion as well.
As to the repertoire, the songs flowed easily into each other, with successful changes of energy and range as well as emotional content. Included in the programme were medleys from tight harmony group The Carpenters, nice arrangements of classics like Somewhere over the Rainbow, a selection of Tracy Chapman’s fabulous songs with Tammy doing the solo honours on Fast Car and a little African medley that included Waka Waka which showed off the sweet potency of Chloe’s voice. There was a lilting rendition of Ave Maria and Adele’s really lovely Make you Feel my Love from a shiny-eyed Shelly.
There was also fun and games with the famous-gone-viral Cup Song (When I’m Gone) from the movie Pitch Perfect, which was done by the whole group  who managed the tricky rhythm and the sweet bluesy song perfectly. Warmed up and glowing, the quintet then moved into the closure of the programme with a challenging musical round which included the Chordette’s lively version of Lollipop. A generous encore in the form of Michael Jackson’s I Never Can say Good Bye  brought an evening of fabulous entertainment to a close  and the audience to their feet.
The programme was well thought out, not only to showcase the range of talents but to please a wide range of listeners. This was evident in the generational demographics in the audience which had many more young faces in the crowd than I have seen before at Rhumbelow. As this is a wonderful and well established venue, it’s highly likely that tireless musical promoter Roland Stansell can expect some fresh talent knocking on his door. And meantime, the group, ‘Take 5’, will be out and about so don’t miss them!

"Glamorous Group is as easy to look at as to listen to" - Review by Keith Millar

Glamorous group is as easy to look at as to listen to. (Review by Keith Millar)

August is designated as woman’s month. So it is entirely appropriate that the Rhumbelow Theatre’s current offering is the all-female musical ensemble, Take Five.

Formed by well-known Durban singer and music teacher, Shelly McLean, the group also features the singing talents of Tory Du Plessis, Tammy Saville, Haylea Hounsome and Chloe Clark.

Each girl is very talented in her own right but together they are sensational. They sing tight harmony arrangements of an eclectic range of music which includes contemporary hits, jazz standards, popular musical theatre tunes and even a touch of classics.

They take to the stage looking very glamorous in evening dresses, which are changed quite often. They are as easy to look at as they are to listen to.

As a singing group they have an impressive vocal range. From the deep sultry tones of Tory Du Plessis to the sweet soprano of Haylea Hounsome. This allows them to do justice to most songs. The girls take turns in accompanying the ensemble on the piano and, on occasion, a guitar and djembe drums are also used as backing.

Included in the programme are songs from artists such as Elton John, Avril Lavigne, Adele, The Carpenters, Train and Tracy Chapman. An compilation of South African music includes Tula Baba, Ipitombi and Shakira’s soccer world cup song Waka Waka. My favourites were a duo by Shelly and Haylea of Ava Maria and the group’s clever arrangements of Somewhere over the Rainbow and Cindy Lauper’s True Colours.

However, this is not a tribute show in the sense that the ensemble performs cover versions of all this music. Each song is arranged to suit their talents and style, and the result is a distinct Take Five sound.

The quaint and rustic Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo was launched in July 2001. It is a friendly and welcoming venue which is expertly managed by Roland Stansell and his team. They have also recently opened a Rhumbelow Theatre in Pietermaritzburg. In the 12 years of its existence, the theatre has played an important role in staging many very successful cabaret and musical shows for Durban’s audiences. Take Five’s performance is another feather in the cap of this enterprising venture, as well as been a suitable tribute to woman’s month.

Performances of Take Five will take place next weekend on Friday and Saturday (August 16 and 17) at 20h00 and on Sunday (August 18) at 18h30. The venue opens 90 minutes before show for picnic dinner.

Tickets R100 (less 25% pensioners and tables of eight or more). Take along food picnic baskets and braais will be available. There is limited secure parking and booking is essential. A cash bar is available (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises). Rhumbelow Theatre is situated in Cunningham Avenue off Bartle Road.
